We’ve put together some recommendations on how to clean up if your property has recently been affected by flooding.
While many homes were left unsafe to enter due to the unprecedented Auckland flooding in late January, those affected that are still habitable are in need of repair and cleaning.
It’s especially important to clean and sanitise surfaces affected by flood, as flood waters can carry infectious diseases, and hazardous chemicals.
Read on for a list of products you’ll need and how to use them in the event of a flood clean up.
Soap & water
The basics are the most important thing when performing cleaning of any kind.
Clean hands reduce the chance of infection for yourself and others.
We have a range of personal care products for hand washing that also maintain moisture:

Bleach
A solution of diluted bleach can be effective for cleaning walls, floors, and other hard surfaces that have been affected by flooding.
We recommend Kemsol White Angel, a high-strength bleach suitable for both domestic and commercial applications.

Ammonia
Ammonia is also an effective cleaner for floors, walls and other hard surfaces.
We recommend Kemsol XL Ammonia, a concentrated hard surface detergent cleaner.

Use at a ratio of 1:19 (5% solution) for heavy cleaning.
Glass Cleaner
For windows and glass surfaces that may have been soiled by flooding, a good glass cleaner should help get it sparkling clean again.
We recommend Kemsol Blick, ideal for glass, mirrors, tiles and chrome cleaning:

For glass cleaning applications, use at a ratio of 1:19 (5% solution). Spray on, then wipe with a dry, lint-free cloth.
Deodorisers
You’ve done your absolute best to clean and sanitise your property.
Yet malodours still linger.
If achieving odour-free premises is the final step to returning your place to a professional level of presentation, you may want to try a deodoriser.
We recommend Kemsol Paris, a powerful odour neutraliser.

Simply atomise into the air in rooms containing odours, or directly at the source of an odour if possible.
Safety first
Finally, it’s important to stay safe when using any chemicals.
Wear the appropriate PPE. Keep the product SDS handy.
